Pattern Directions

Note: These directions work with ANY yarn and ANY hook size. Use what you have available!

Let’s Get Started!

Start: Put the hair tie on your hook before you tie on your yarn.

Row 1: Slst to the elastic, then make SC stitches until the entire hair tie is covered. Make sure you end on an odd number. I usually use 35 SC stitches, but feel free to use more or less as desired. Slst to close the round, then ch1

Row 2A: SC into the same stitch as your ch1, then ch3. Skip 1 stitch, and SC into the next. Repeat this (CH3, skip 1, SC) pattern all the way around the scrunchie.

Row 2B: When you get to the last SC stitch, instead of another ch3, work a DC stitch into your first ch3 space as shown. This will start our next row.

Row 3: Now we’re basically repeating Row 2. Ch3, but instead of skipping stitches, slst into the loop made by the ch3 from Row 2. Repeat this all the way around the scrunchie. To finish, slst to your starting stitch and fasten off.

Customization Options

Now that we have the base pattern down, how can we customize it? Here are some ideas:

Row 2, Option A: Ch5 instead of ch3

Row 2, Option B: Instead of skipping 1SC stitch every time, don’t skip any!

Row 2 & 3: Don’t skip any stitches in either row, AND always ch5 for an extra frilly version!

Samples

Top Right: Using all Ch5s instead of ch3s
